At the beginning of March, a new collection of linen embroidered clothing was ready for presentation. We decided to sew masks of the remaining fabrics. The demand was huge. During the first week, we used all the fabric we had. When we bought a new batch, the price turned out to be higher but even more difficult was the situation with a price for the rubber band. Our suppliers simply didn’t have it. Therefore, I had to buy it at inflated retail prices. After the quarantine announcement, panic among workers increased. On the one hand, we had orders for masks, and on the other, it became scary to communicate. That is why we quickly reformatted our production, dividing people and equipment in separate premises, providing almost contactless transfer of products, purchasing disposable solutions, which also jumped wildly in price. Another test was the stoppage of the city’s public transport. This forced us to hire additional couriers. Consequently, we set the price for a three-layer reusable mask at 40 UAH, so as not to be lossmaking.

Managers were accepting orders for masks from home offices. Our director was remotely forming a letter of orders, and the technologist endlessly in remote mode was advising masters how to sew masks technologically properly. Couriers were supplying materials, collecting finished goods, then delivering them to customers and mailing pre-orders. And all this time I was managing this transformation from home and paying the bills because I was self-isolating myself for 2 weeks since the day before the quarantine announcement I returned from abroad.

Suddenly, we were exploring a completely different market – spontaneously formed by panic, confusion and a mass of negative information. I am sure that everyone can sew a mask on their own. Therefore, we were very pleased that people trusted us and wanted to buy from us. A lot of thanks came from FB and Instagram, we got orders for masks of unusual colours or with embroidery. Some dealers suggested that they would buy from us, whatever we made, for resale.

There were also dissatisfied customers – we were accused of a "shameless" price of 40UAH on linen three-layer masks, criticized for not enough standard sizes, delays in the work of couriers. Yes, we made mistakes: confusing orders, colours, placing less or more in the parcel than was ordered. Remote work also affected standards, especially in the first week. When dressmakers work in a shop and their work is constantly monitored by a technologist, it is easier to achieve better quality than managing remote production. However, we corrected these defects.

The interesting thing was the taste of our customers. Black masks were the most popular. In the second place: white and beige. It even forced us to develop a new model: a black – beige mask. Purple, blue and yellow were the next highest priority orders. More often than other locals, the people of Kyiv ordered bright colours: red and green. One more interesting observation: children like our masks:)

They could not wait until their order arrives so they could gladly wear them. Regarding styles, we have developed 2 types of masks: with folds and “muzzles”. The audience was divided into three categories: some required folded masks, others wanted “muzzles”, and the third part did not care. Therefore, after misunderstandings with several clients, we left the masks in the most popular colours “in the folds”, and began to sew the coloured “muzzles”. Sewing the latter is more difficult, and therefore more expensive, so they are less popular.

No matter how beautiful the textile masks are, we encourage, wherever possible, the use of medical masks of the highest protection. And these masks as a replacement, when there are no medical or when there are not enough medical (to change every 2-4 hours).

For today, the project “masks” is lossmaking for us. Nevertheless, I still think it’s a win. I am very proud of our work and our team. We were able to adjust in the short term and help fill the “mass vacuum” caused by the epidemic. The number of loyal customers has increased. Our social media pages have become more popular.

Now the wave of orders has decreased. We left on sale gift sets of 5 coloured masks for 290UAH, and masks for 40 UAH each. I am sure that such an accessory will not go out of modern fashion for a long time, even after the epidemic is over.

Christmas all year round in Ukraine. Or why we decorate Christmas trees in the summer)

The idea, that Koza Dereza needs a space, where our collections could be shown, has long been in our manufacture. Having a huge experience in presenting our products at numerous exhibitions in the worlds best markets, we would like to demonstrate the skills we have gained in decor and interior. However, the volume of work that was to be carried out and the lack of experience in such cases did not allow to start the conceived. An exciting push was getting acquainted with Marina Maslova, and a talk about social responsibility of business in building up the infrastructure of our city and the importance of creating new locations that would be attractive both for the citizen and for tourists.

Long before the opening of the Koza Dereza production, I was genuinely surprised by overseas stores selling Christmas products all year round – this format of the showroom was the best fit for us. So I went for a search of experience to RothenburgobderTauber, the charming Bavarian town, where Christmas lives all year round. We were very interested in German practice, but our project is completely
different from what we have seen.

The particularity of our showroom “Christmas all year round” is that it is connected with the production of New Years toys, gifts and decor. At first guests can see the whole process of creating a toy, watching the masters, and then see this thing in the interior, or try to do the same with their own hands, get acquainted with modern trends of New Years decor. Repair work was completed in May 2019, but improvements continue to this day – we are working out photo zones, developing new master classes and programs for celebrating childrens birthdays and other events, establishing contacts with travel agencies.

And also we stock up with aromatic herbs in the winter – after all, every visitor will have to taste fragrant herbal tea during a visit to Koza Dereza).

All visits are planned in advance – you can call (067) 82-43-723, or contact us through social networks. Such planning helps to avoid crashes in the manufacture and to give enough time to the guests. After all, the master classes are carried out by our employees, and at high load we can not host. This, in fact, prompted us to work on Saturday and Sunday, when both visitors and masters are free. In short, we celebrate without a weekend!).

With the warmth of Christmas in the heart, Victoria Kolodiy

Tips from our masters!
“How to make a handmade gift that is not ashamed to give”

A gift made by hand is the best idea for a present. However, there are rules for people, who like handmade goods. A good product is hours of laborious work, a well thought out idea, artistic performance. We share tips-how to do something like that, not to blush it).

1. Choose materials in that you are sure. In each city you can find specialized stores, from where the hand-man can always choose something to your liking.

2. If you plan to work with paints, select only safe, high quality, do not lose color. Well, if you are given an eco-certificate for such materials, to be calm. When Koza Dereza conducted the eco-certification of their products, we had to submit not only certificates for paints, but even conclusions about the absence of impurities of heavy metals in them, which was then checked in the laboratory.

3. Work neatly! The product should be well-polished if it is a tree or metal or glass, gently stitched, if we work with textiles, clean and neat if it is paper, etc. There are many options!

4. Think about how your gift will be used and whether it is acceptable to the person who receives it. It is best to give your own hand made product in the family – because you know best about their tastes, and who as non-relatives will appreciate your titanic work and will accept any result with gratitude.

5. Take care of the packaging! Get a packaged gift will be nicer! Package can be made independently or buy a nice box in the shops.

6. Add a postcard. Though we do not have the time to write something today, and prefer electronic communication, but write a greetings from a few sincere words – believe me, it’s nice to everyone.
Successes and creative achievements!

Autobiography of Sparrow

-How is it – to be made by hand?

– Im happy. Glad to give warm and positive emotions to people. I am hanging on a bag or purse – and all of you smile, sniff and say that i smell like vanilla perfectly. And this smell i have for quite a long time …
– My first memory? This is a moment when I was painted by designers on paper. I really liked my sketch: the red torso and the golden tail are the best that can only be for the sparrow! Now red is my favorite color. . Seamstress sewed me together. Filling and here I am already a real bird. And I want so to fly!
– And then? I was brought to the painting craft. The smell there was fantastic! I was covered with vanilla solution, so I smelled great. I happy when people rejoice with my own aroma).
– The most magical moment? This is a painting for me. Everything depended on the hands and emotions of the artist who painted me. I am very grateful to her! Smooth and sure movements painted the wings. I kept breathing so that, perhaps, do not distract the artist and not disturb this magic process. I will never forget these warm hands that have brought me to life! It is impossible to convey the happiness that I survived, realizing: “Yes, I became the best sparrow-keychain!” At least, that told me artist when i were ready…
– Am I happy? Yes, I’m happy to be here and now, keep safe a bag and study the world around when i travel with my owner. And, you know, I’m really pretty)
