Wooden nativity scene 'Lodge'

Filled with sacredness and sincere hopes, Christmas symbolizes purity and spirituality brought by the birth of Jesus Christ. Numerous canonical and apocryphal texts about the birth of the Son of God have been preserved. Interpreting them, people for two millennia, each in their own way, expressed their devotion to Jesus through prayer, songs, or ritual actions. Among these traditions, the practice of setting up a nativity scene, a representation of Christ's birth, has endured.

The name for the nativity scene varies depending on the country. In the Ukrainian language, this word, as well as the tradition itself, came from Poland. Initially, nativity scenes were set up in churches from Christmas to the Presentation of the Lord, but later, miniatures of the Bethlehem stable appeared in the homes of wealthy Ukrainian families.

Externally, nativity scenes resemble a nativity scene box or a little house, depicting the night when the Savior was born. In Ukraine, they began to be mass-produced in the 20th century using materials like wood, clay, and paper. Currently, the largest nativity scene is installed in the St. Apostle Peter's Church in Ternopil, the heart of the "Koza Dereza" ethnographic workshop. This composition, with a width of 40 meters and a height of 20 meters, has entered the Ukrainian Book of Records and features dozens of figurines of animals and biblical characters.
